September 13th: Naxos

"Slept in" this morning till about 9. Cooked breakfast, got dressed and we were on our way to explore the island for the day. First stop was the Gate of Zeus or something. I just call it the "window".

Super windy day. The waves kept crashing hard against the rocks we had to cross. Walking back from the "window", our left sides were pretty much wet from the wave "remnants". *grumble*

Scooted to past the Filoti town so that we could go up Mount Zeus.

Blardy *bleep*ing paths are so damn poorly marked. We managed to find the cave where supposedly Zeus was raised but after that ... ouf! Started climbing up the loose rocks. Got to a point where this guy coming down told us not to go the way we were heading as it dead-ended for him. Grrr ... At least he gave us a hint as to where to go as he saw some folks along a path above us. So we went. Damn tough. I almost bailed! My legs got so scratched up from the damn twigs and prickly plants (ok .. I exaggerate a little). But we went. Lost the path a few times but did make it to the top where the view was not that spectactular given the "hazy" air. Had lunch, took our pictures and started our way down. Of course we got lost but we really were far. You know how a small mistake at the top of the mountain leads to a much larger one going down the mountain? Yeah ... we made the error despite a warning given to us from a gentleman we met on the way up to remember where to turn as we descend. Anyway, we had to cross over (thank god, we didn't go too far) and were saved by a couple descending and were on the path. They waved us over towards the path. Bah ... Lousy markers!

After that, drove to find some castle near Agias Anna. Can't find the friggin' thing so we're just sitting on the beach for a while before heading back and going for dinner.

Barely made it to watch the sunset by the "window". Very pretty. Went to dinner near the square. Had lamb - delicious! Wandered around the harbour again and got some Greek cookies. Went to take some night shots. Made our way to the "window" again.

Some house - looks kinda creepy
Ok ... no one's here and there doesn't seem to be any "alarm" system, let's go take our picture by the window itself. Area has been roped off very likely to preserve it. Set timer ... RUN!!! *camera click* RUN again!!! Hehehe ... Ok, we're not going to get arrested. Had a drink by old market but too windy/cold so we drank and came back. Will sleep in tomorrow and catch the later ferry.
